Denim Day in LA & USA 2010

Peace Over Violence is proud to present the Annual Denim Day in LA & USA 2010, a campaign to raise awareness and educate the public about rape and sexual assault. This year it is Wednesday April 21, 2010.

In 1998, an Italian Supreme Court decision overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore jeans, reasoning she must have helped her attacker remove them. People all over the world were outraged. Wearing jeans became an international symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.

Last year, on Denim Day an unprecedented 1,000,000 individuals and organizations signed up to wear jeans in support of raising awareness about the need to end sexual violence. This year we aim to at least double that amount.

This day we unite against the sexual assault of girls, women, boys and men. We stand in support of survivors. We break the silence to end sexual violence.

On Denim Day, wear your jeans as a visible sign of protest against the myths that still surround sexual assault!

What can you do to make the Annual Denim Day in LA & USA a success?

  • Wear denim on April 21, 2010.
  • Tell your friends and family to wear jeans
  • Register at www.denimdayinla.org or denimdayinla.org.
  • Use the action kit to spread the word about Denim Day.
  • Donate to Dollars for Denim.

When you participate in Denim Day in LA & USA on April 21, 2010 you:

  • Make it possible for more survivors of sexual assault to reach out and find help.
  • Promote prevention through education so that sexual violence doesn’t occur in the first place.
  • Encourage men and boys to understand that strength is not for hurting, and the critical role they play in preventing violence against women.
  • Encourage institutional and societal change.
